Report on Algorithmic Risk Assessment Tools in the U.S. Criminal Justice System
Report on Algorithmic Risk Assessment Tools in the U.S. Criminal Justice System — in 2018-2019 at the Partnership on AI we convened a group of AI and data science experts, social scientists and lawyers from across major tech companies and civil society to produce this report on the use of algorithmic prediction tools in US pretrial detention settings (though they are also often used for sentencing and release decisions). We identified numerous grave problems with those existing systems, and although there was not consensus on whether it would ever be appropriate to use such systems or not in the future, the group did reach consensus on a set of requirements that systems would need to meet in order to be appropriate. Most current options fail to meet most of these requirements.
